Talking Politics on the Trams

Apparently old Polish people don't understand "Jestem ze stanow.  Nie dobrze mowie po polsku."  Translation: I'm from the States.  I don't speak Polish well.

If a conversation ensues about why I'm in Poland...they, without fail, start talking about politics.  I haven't really studied the vocabulary necessary for this...so generally, they talk and I just nod and listen.  The information I glean from these encounters is incredibly interesting.

Usually I'm only clued into the change in conversation when I catch the name of our president.

A few days ago, a guy told me all his friends think he's racist because he doesn't like Obama.  Another time, a lady started raving about how great it is that America has the first black president.

Today, I was told that there is no difference between Bush and Obama.  He said multiple things about Afghanistan, Iraq, money, and gas and kept saying "to samo", the same.

So, opinions about American politics are about as diverse here as back home.  Maybe after the election, people will care about important things...like sports.  The Tigers are probably heading to the World Series and my students just don't care!
