Crazy Hostel Mates

For the whole story about my Christmas break, check here.

Anna and I spent almost a week in two different hostels, both in Budapest and Warsaw.  Unfortunately, all of my friends in Warsaw were traveling for the holidays and couldn't provide a housing, so to the hostel we went.

I have stayed in hostels multiple times in multiple cities and NEVER had so many incredibly bizarre experiences stacked on top of one another.  One such episode in a trip is to be expected, an inconsiderate light-leaver-on-er or the early early riser, but the number of strange bunk mates we encountered was outrageous.

First, in Budapest, we were in a room for six girls.  There were two girls studying in England, but from India and somewhere in Asia.  They never said anything to either Anna, me, or the other girl sharing our room.  However, they stayed up incredibly late and wouldn't turn off the lights.  That would be somewhat okay if the one girl didn't fall asleep with the lights on.

On our second night, Anna woke her up and asked for her light to be switched off.  To which the girl replied (at one in the morning) that she would be turning it back on in a few minutes when she woke up to take a shower.  The girl didn't take a shower until she woke up the next morning.

They left on our third night, but in came a group of three girls from Germany.  First, the housecleaning lady took Anna's bedding off of her bed and so she had to remake a bed of one of the girls that had left.  Secondly, when Anna and me stopped back in our room around 6 pm before dinner, ALL THE GIRLS WERE ASLEEP!  Who goes to sleep at 6 pm?  They also took naps on NYE, they were asleep at 6 pm, gone around 11:30 when I went up to our room, and were back in bed by the time Anna and I returned around 12:45 am.  The hours they kept were quite bizarre.

However, these girls weren't as strange as the girl in Warsaw.  Anna and I went to our room in Warsaw and another girl brought her luggage in, put it on a bed, and left.  When we woke up the next morning, her stuff was still in the same place and the girl wasn't in her bed.  She showed up around 10 am while we were getting ready for sightseeing, crawled into bed and went to sleep.  When we came back later that night, she was still asleep, but when I woke up at 7 am the next morning she was gone.

The last night was the worst.  People checked into the hostel after midnight and around 7 am so we were woken up frequently as people made their beds and such.  I was incredibly happy to be back in my own bed last night!
